The Österlen region in southern Sweden, with Linderödsåsen’s beech wood forests and Hanöbukten’s miles of sandy beaches, attracts many to discover southeast Skåne's nature and culture. For those looking for family-friendly accommodation with welcoming hosts who provide valuable tips on the best hiking trails, bike paths and local treasures, we recommended a night or more at Gladan & Vråken Hostel.
On a beautiful summer day in 1991 Lena Xen and Thomas Sundin put up the hostel sign. A few minutes later, the first two guests arrived by bicycle. And since then, the business has kept on rolling in.
The mid 1800s red brick building is strategically located at the edge of Brösarp’s northern slopes. In Brösarp, you walk, relax and enjoy in the middle of a hilly landscape with magnificent views. Enjoy lovely spring walks among flowering primroses and pasque flowers in yellow and purple. You can spend lazy afternoons among the hills’ dry summer grass where carnations and lilies shine white. Or, go for a refreshing autumn walk, watching the birds as they fly south. Whatever the season, Gladan & Vråken (The Kite och Buzzard Hostel) is a perfect starting point and an affordable option for exploration by foot or bicycle. The hosts Lena and Thomas have explored these areas for more than 20 years, and are happy to share their experiences and contacts.
The hostel has nearly ten rooms that are individually furnished and decorated with old-fashioned charm. It offers self-catering, buffet breakfast with local bread and fresh eggs from the neighbouring farm and a lush and spacious garden. Larger groups and small conferences are also able to rent the entire hostel exclusively. This gives access to the conference and meeting hall and the opportunity for fruitful conversations in front of the fire.
Lena and Thomas offer hospitality on a personal level that is characterized by flexibility, good local knowledge and valuable suggestions for excursions. They tell and show you everything from where to find orchids and bombshells, to Christina Piper’s historic and revolutionary approach to the alum industry and the area's many artists.
Labelling Committee´s motivation (6 March 2013)
The Nature's Best application process gave Gladan & Vråken a new start and resulted in newly renovated rooms. But from the start, they demonstrated extensive knowledge of the area's natural and cultural heritage and guest-confirmed, warm hospitality. This is a great starting point and an affordable lodging option for your explorations into one of Skåne's most beautiful places.
