Night canoeing amongst the wolves

There is something special about canoeing at night. In the centre of the Bergslagen district, 200 km northwest of Stockholm, in one of Sweden’s largest nature reserves and far from civilisation, the canoes glide through the water in total silence. So silent that wolf cries can sometimes be heard in the distance. Later, a crackling fire awaits, together with exciting tales about the sounds of the forest...

For the uninitiated, it is just dark. The more experienced, once their eyes get used to it, know that the darkness really has many different colours and shades. The contrast is greater under the starry night sky, far from the lights of the city. Moonlight is reflected in the water, and the sounds of the forest are intense. This area has one of the densest wild animal populations in Sweden, including elk, deer, lynx, beaver, fox, hare and badger. The canoeing tour passes through one of Bergslagen’s wolf territories and sometimes the cry of the wolf can be heard in the distance.

You’re in fine company, with family or friends, and an expert guide who knows the forest and has a lot to tell about its inhabitants. In the magical light of the dusk, you glide through the water in a Canadian canoe or in a kayak in remote territory, along narrow forest lakes. After a while you go ashore on a peninsula, where a campfire is lit. Enjoy a good meal in the wilderness.

Replete, you return to the canoes and continue under the starry sky to a beautiful spot where a tipi awaits you. You simply have to creep into bed for a wonderful nights sleep. The following morning, a tasty outdoor breakfast helps you greet the new day, with or without a dip in the lake.
