Deep in the ancient boreal forests of Hälsingland, Håkan and Eva Vargas have created an experience that offers a fascinating insight into the world of the European Brown Bear. Here in this sparsely populated landscape of middle Sweden Brown bear and other carnivores thrive. Your chances of observing an individual or family of these magnificent creatures is outstanding but of course never guaranteed.
The hide is one hours walk from Vargas Wilderness Lodge and is purpose built to make your observation time comfortable. The hide’s cosy interior provides guests with a bed and warm sleeping bag, toilet, sauna and hot water for a morning shower. After a traditional three course meal made from fresh, seasonal produce the evening is filled with conversation about the bear and Håkan will tell tales of his experiences, encounters and conservation efforts.
As night closes in you silently take your place camera at the ready. Peaking through your personal viewing portal in the hide’s walls you’ll apprehensively wait for telltale sounds or movements. As you wait you can take a nap or read from the hide’s small library of books on nature and wildlife. Suddenly in the small hours of the morning everyone is alert and excited as the snap of branches is heard beyond the meadow. Your encounter is about to begin.
The following morning after a world class wilderness experience you’ll wake to a hearty breakfast. Returning to Vargas Wilderness Lodge there’s time for a sauna and a quick swim in the clear cool spring fed waters of Lake Öjungen.
