Deep in the ancient boreal forests of Hälsingland Vargas Wilderness Lodge has created an experience that offers a fascinating insight into the world of the European Brown Bear. Here in the sparsely populated forests of middle Sweden bear and other carnivores thrive. Your chances of observing individuals or family group of these magnificent creatures over the three days is excellent.
Vargas Wilderness Lodge is set on the edge of beautiful lake surrounded by a tranquil, forested landscape of rolling hills. The first evening is spent at the lodge where you will enjoy a traditional Hälsingland three-course dinner . Then it’s early to bed so you’re ready for the long nights of observation ahead.
After a traditional buffet breakfast there is time to enjoy the lake and its small islands by paddling a kayak or rowing a boat as your hosts prepare lunch.
After lunch it’s an hour walk from Vargas Wilderness Lodge to the purpose built bear watching hide. The hide’s cosy interior provides guests with a bed and warm sleeping bag, toilet and hot water for a morning shower. After a traditional three course dinner made from fresh, seasonal produce the evening is filled with conversation about the bear and Håkan will tell tales of his experiences and encounters.
As night closes in you take your place camera at the ready. Peaking through your personal viewing portal in the hide’s walls you apprehensively wait for telltale sounds or movements. As you wait you can take a nap or read from the hide’s small library of books on nature and wildlife. Suddenly in the small hours of the morning everyone is alert and excited as the snap of branches is heard beyond the meadow. Your encounter is about to begin.
Between bear watching sessions there’s plenty of time to relax, read and catch up on sleep. The three days are soon over but the memories and pictures will stay with you for a lifetime.
On the last morning you’ll wake to a hearty breakfast and take time to reflect on a world class nature experience. Returning to Vargas Wilderness Lodge there’s time for a sauna and a quick swim in the clear, cool spring fed waters of Lake Öjungen.
